POSITION SUMMARYThe Senior Director of Transportation & Fleet serves as the enterprise leader for all over the road freight, last mile delivery execution, and fleet lifecycle management across a national distribution network. This role shapes the long term transportation vision, drives operational excellence, and ensures the company's transportation network operates with maximum efficiency, reliability, and cost competitiveness.
This executive oversees transportation strategy, carrier partnerships, parcel relationships, and fleet assets across 70+ distribution centers, ensuring alignment with company growth, customer expectations, and financial objectives.
This position is located onsite in Appleton, WI (relocation assistance can be provided).
JOB RESPONSIBILITIESTransportation Strategy- Develop and execute a multi-year transportation strategy covering long-haul, middle-mile, and last-mile delivery networks.
- Oversee vendor network, RFP processes and 3rd party relationships to maximize service while driving cost per mile savings.
- Evaluate and implement new and emerging transportation technologies, automation, and digital tools to enhance visibility and track performance.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives across the transportation ecosystem, including mode optimization and lane consolidation.
Fleet Management & Asset Strategy- Oversee the full lifecycle of company-owned and leased fleet assets, including procurement, maintenance, compliance, and replacement planning.
- Establish fleet standards, specifications, and sustainability initiatives (e.g., electrification, fuel efficiency, telematics).
- Ensure fleet operations meet all federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, including DOT and safety compliance.
- Partner with Finance and Procurement to optimize fleet investment, total cost of ownership, and vendor relationships.
Operational Leadership & Performance Management- Provide strategic leadership to regional and national transportation teams, ensuring consistent execution across 70+ distribution centers.
- Build and manage KPIs for cost, service, safety, and productivity across all transportation modes.
- Lead carrier management strategy, including contract negotiations, performance scorecards, and capacity planning.
- Oversee last-mile courier strategy, including partner selection, performance management, and customer experience alignment.
Cross-Functional Collaboration- Partner with Distribution, Network Operations, Procurement, and Sales to align transportation capabilities with business needs.
- Collaborate with IT and Data Analytics teams to enhance transportation visibility, reporting, and predictive analytics.
- Serve as the executive transportation subject-matter expert for enterprise initiatives, M&A integration, and network expansion.
Leadership & Talent Development- Build and mentor a high-performing transportation leadership team.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.

QUALIFICATIONSRequired:- 12+ years of progressive leadership experience in transportation, logistics, or supply chain within a large, multi-site organization.
- Deep expertise in over-the-road freight, last-mile delivery, and fleet management.
- Proven success leading large-scale transportation networks and multimillion-dollar budgets.
- Strong analytical and strategic planning skills, with experience using transportation modeling and optimization tools.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence at the executive level.
- Knowledge of DOT regulations, fleet compliance, and safety programs.
- Bachelor's degree required; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
