POSITION OVERVIEWA growing MEP consulting team is seeking a motivated
Mechanical Designer with 1-5 years of mechanical/HVAC design experience to support a multidisciplinary engineering team.
This is an opportunity for an early-career mechanical professional to build hands-on experience producing construction documents, developing HVAC layouts, preparing basic engineering calculations, coordinating mechanical systems with other disciplines, and supporting projects through construction administration.
Working alongside Project Engineers and Senior Designers, the Mechanical Designer will translate engineering concepts and sketches into accurate CAD and Revit drawings while developing practical knowledge of HVAC systems, mechanical equipment, BIM coordination, and building-system design.
The ideal candidate is technically detail-oriented, organized, dependable, and eager to grow into progressively higher-responsibility mechanical design roles.
PROJECT WORKThe Mechanical Designer may support a variety of MEP building projects involving:
- HVAC system design
- Ductwork layouts and coordination
- Mechanical piping systems
- Mechanical equipment layouts
- Air handling units (AHUs)
- Rooftop units (RTUs)
- Pumps and heat exchangers
- Mechanical equipment schedules
- Multidiscipline BIM coordination
- Construction documentation
- Existing-condition documentation and as-built drawings
- Construction administration and field support
WHO THIS POSITION IS BEST FORThis position is best suited for an early-career mechanical designer who wants to strengthen their technical design skills while working alongside experienced engineers and senior designers.
The ideal candidate has a solid foundation in
AutoCAD and Revit MEP, understands basic HVAC concepts, pays close attention to drawing accuracy, and is comfortable receiving direction while gradually taking ownership of more complex design responsibilities.

MEP consulting, HVAC design, BIM, or building systems engineering.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- Produce and revise mechanical drawings, details, and construction-document sets using AutoCAD and Revit.
- Follow established office CAD standards, layer conventions, naming standards, and documentation procedures.
- Translate engineering concepts, sketches, and design direction into accurate 2D drawings and 3D models.
- Develop HVAC, ductwork, piping, and mechanical equipment layouts.
- Perform basic HVAC load calculations under the supervision of engineers or senior designers.
- Assist with mechanical equipment selection and prepare equipment schedules and specifications.
- Coordinate mechanical systems with architectural, structural, electrical, and plumbing disciplines.
- Participate in BIM coordination sessions and help identify and resolve system clashes.
- Prepare as-built drawings and incorporate field redlines and site measurements.
- Assist with site visits and field documentation.
- Respond to RFIs under the direction of project engineers or project managers.
- Assist with reviewing shop drawings, submittals, and vendor information.
- Maintain organized drawing files, project documentation, and version control.
- Support project managers and engineers in meeting project deadlines and deliverables.
- Apply practical understanding of constructability when developing mechanical layouts.
- Continue developing knowledge of mechanical systems, building codes, BIM coordination, and engineering design practices.
QUALIFICATIONS- 1-5 years of relevant experience in mechanical design, MEP design, drafting, or a related field.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit MEP required.
- Familiarity with HVAC fundamentals, duct sizing, piping schematics, and mechanical equipment.
- Strong technical drafting and modeling skills.
- Strong attention to detail and drawing accuracy.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to follow direction from Project Engineers and Senior Designers.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks while meeting project deadlines.
- Organized, dependable, and willing to learn.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Engineering Graphics, Engineering Design Technology, or a related program.
- Experience with load-calculation software such as Trane TRACE or Carrier HAP.
- Familiarity with duct and piping sizing tools.
- Basic knowledge of local building codes, the International Mechanical Code (IMC), and energy-code requirements.
- Exposure to construction administration, site visits, field measurements, or shop-drawing review.
- Familiarity with Navisworks or Bluebeam.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Prior experience supporting commercial or building-system projects.
TECHNICAL EXPERTISEThe successful candidate should demonstrate or develop experience with:
Mechanical Design: HVAC layouts, ductwork, piping, mechanical equipment, equipment schedules, and construction documentation.
BIM & Drafting: AutoCAD, Revit MEP, 2D drafting, 3D modeling, BIM coordination, drawing standards, and document control.
HVAC Engineering: Basic load calculations, duct sizing, equipment selection, piping layouts, and mechanical-system fundamentals.
Coordination: Architectural, structural, electrical, and plumbing coordination, clash detection, and multidisciplinary BIM meetings.
Construction Support: Field measurements, as-built documentation, RFIs, shop drawings, submittals, and construction administration.
