The Right of Way Bureau is responsible for ensuring strategic oversight of all right of way activities, providing fair property valuations, and conducting effective negotiations with property owners impacted by highway improvement projects. We support the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) to assist the Department right of way personnel and other governmental agencies when utilizing Federal-aid funds in complying with both state and federal laws, regulations, and directives.

As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrate leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.

Why does the job exist?

The Right of Way Bureau Chief is to manage all right-of-way activities related to highway projects. This includes new right-of-way acquisition, property valuations, negotiations with property owners, provide relocation assistance as needed and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.

The Bureau Chief at the NMDOT Right of Way Bureau is responsible for overseeing seven distinct units under three sections, each integral to the bureau¿s operations. The Bureau Chief ensures strategic oversight, fair property valuation, and effective negotiations with property owners. This adept leadership is essential for the successful execution of transportation projects and the advancement of the state¿s infrastructure goals. The position¿s importance is underscored by its direct influence on the department¿s ability to manage property transactions and maintain progress in developing transportation networks.

Ideal Candidate

The Bureau Chief for the New Mexico Department of Transportation¿s Right of Way Bureau is a pivotal leadership role that demands advanced management skills and strategic oversight. Candidates should possess substantial knowledge and experience in right of way acquisition, relocation, and valuation. Ideally, applicants will have direct, hands¿on experience performing Right of Way activities within NMDOT, as well as with local governments and Tribal entities.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited college or university and ten (10) years of professional-level experience with a light strategic impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling fourteen (14) years may substitute for the required education and experience. A hiring agency will designate a portion of the required experience to include management, supervisory and/or specialized experience. Any required licensure, certification or registration shall be defined at the time of recruitment and will be in addition to the above requirements.
