At Santa Fe Animal Shelter, our Spay & Neuter Clinic is a critical part of that work-providing accessible, high-volume surgical care that supports both the community and the shelter's long-term sustainability. We're looking for a skilled, efficient, and compassionate HQHVSN veterinarian who takes pride in doing this work well and at scale.

The High-Volume Spay/Neuter (HQHVSN) Veterinarian plays a critical role in delivering

accessible, high-quality surgical and preventive care that directly reduces pet

overpopulation and supports community animal welfare. This position leads high-volume

spay/neuter surgeries three days per week and provides vaccine and wellness services

one day per week, ensuring efficient, safe, and compassionate care for every patient.

Working as part of a mission-driven team, the veterinarian helps expand access to

essential services for underserved populations while supporting the financial sustainability

of the organization. Beyond clinical work, the role contributes to community impact

through education, collaboration, and a shared commitment to improving outcomes for

pets and the people who care for them.

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

? Perform efficient, high-quality high-volume spay/neuter; typically 25-30/day (up to

35 depending on case mix) for both shelter and public animals

? Demonstrate proficiency in pregnant, in-heat, pediatric, cryptorchid spay/neuter

? Lead with a strong understanding of safe and effective anesthetic/analgesic

protocols for high-volume settings

? Oversee pre-operative exams, surgical prep, and post-operative recovery to

ensure patient safety and comfort.

? Work with a highly-skilled support team trained in anesthesia safety, flow, and

handling all within an upbeat and positive team environment

? Wellness clinic responsibilities include conducting basic wellness exams and

administering routine vaccinations.

Requirements

Qualifications:

? DVM/VMD + NM license

? DEA and NM state controlled substance licenses

? Experience in HVHQSN techniques

? Team-oriented, steady under pressure

? Values efficiency, safety, and low-stress handling

Physical Demands

The physical demands noted are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with physical limitations to perform the

? Consistently required to transition from seated to standing; moving, and

? Required to lift and/or carry an animate or stationary object of up to 50 pounds.

? The work environment exposes the employee to a noise level that is moderate to

loud. The employee must be able to handle exposure to working conditions such as poor ventilation, heat, cold, sudden temperature changes, wet quarters, noise, medical and surgical odors as well as animal odors and dander.

? An understanding that SFAS is a managed admissions facility and the euthanasia

and cremation of animals are regular functions of the Shelter.

? Potential for exposure to zoonotic diseases, dangerous and fractious animals,

hazardous chemicals, anesthetics, and sharp objects.

? The employee should be comfortable interacting with animals of various size,

breed, and temperament.

? A valid New Mexico Driver's license is required.
